HIS HIGHNESS SHEIKH DR. SULTAN BIN MOHAMMED BIN SAQR BIN KHALID BIN SULTAN BIN SAQR BIN RASHID ALQASIMI, was born on Sunday 14 of Jumada I in 1358 AH, corresponding to 2 July 1939 in Sharjah.
HIS HIGHNESS SHEIKH DR. SULTAN BIN MOHAMMED ALQASIMI took over the reign of the Emirate of Sharjah on Tuesday 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the day of Arafa in 1391 AH, corresponding to 25 January 1972. He was 32 years old.
His Highness is the 18th Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah in a chain of Al Qasimi Rulers since 1600 AD.
His mother is Sheikha Maryam bint Sheikh Ghanem bin Salim bin Abdullah bin Saeed bin Sabt bin Matar bin Sultan bin Faris bin Shahwan Al Shamsi.
His Highness studied Quran with Sheikh Faris bin Abdulrahman may Allah have mercy on him. Then, he joined the public education in September 1948 in Reform Qasimia school. He was then 9.2 years old. His Highness moved between Sharjah and Kuwait to receive his preparatory and secondary education.
At the end of 1965, he was enrolled in university studies at the Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, from which he obtained a bachelor’s degree in science, agricultural engineering.
His Highness also received two Ph.D. degrees:
First: in the history from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom on 22/7/1985.
The second: in the geopolitics of the Gulf from the University of Durham in the United Kingdom on 2/7/1999.
His Highness also has (20) honorary doctorate degrees – until May 2019 – from the universities of Paris, Canada, Malaysia, Russia and other world renowned universities, and is also an honorary member of various international organizations.
- His Highness held several administrative and scientific positions, including:
- Member of the Supreme Council of the Union of the United Arab Emirates since 1972.
- Minister of Education, United Arab Emirates, 1971-1972.
- President of the American University of Sharjah since 1997.
- President of the University of Sharjah since 1997.
- Visiting Professor, Exeter University, UK since 1998.
- Lecturer in the modern history of the Gulf at the University of Sharjah since 1999.
- Faculty Member, Cairo University – Visiting Professor (emeritus), 2008.
- Membership of the Academy of Sciences, Lisbon, 3 October 2013.
- President of Al Qasimia University in Sharjah, 2015
His Highness was known for his wide culture, his love for science, his appreciation for scientists and his encouragement for scientific research. This scientific passion has been reflected in the Emirate of Sharjah, where it has many scientific and cultural centers, libraries, schools and universities.
